  • Making waves: The kayakers (pictured along with their coach and staff from Linlithgow Academy) are all in the Scottish Champion team

A team of young kayakers from Linlithgow have been making a splash at the local Xcite pool.

For the past four years, the National Development and Performance Squad members of Linlithgow Kayak Racing have used the pool to train for national and international events.

During that time, the list of accolades has continued to grow for its five elite members.

The club is made up of five young people from Linlithgow who have all achieved success at an elite level recently and are all in the Scottish Champion team.

The team members are:

  • Sean Redmond (Under 16 Boys) who is currently British Champion in no less than four separate categories, and ranked fourth in the UK overall (Under 18). Sean was also awarded the Scottish Sports Aid Junior Sportsman of the Year award recently.
  • Amy Redmond (Under 14 Girls) is British Champion in two categories and ranked third in the UK for her age group.
  • Rhonwyn Smith (Under 16 Girls) is sixth in the UK and has two British Championship medals.
  • Lewis Fletcher (Under 18 Boys) is ranked in the UK top ten in four separate categories.
  • The youngest member of the team, Emma Brockway (Under 12 Mini Kayak), who is ranked in the UK top ten in two categories.

Pete Easson, the team’s coach said that the youngsters’ success can be attributed to hard work, dedication and close working with partners.

He said: "For the past four years, the club has worked incredibly hard and that hard work is now paying off.

"Some of the recent achievements are absolutely superb and it could not have been achieved without the support of West Lothian Leisure (WLL) and other partners.

"All the team members live in Linlithgow, so being able to train in the town is so important

"We truly are a home-grown club that is gaining international recognition in kayaking.

“Long may it continue."

Kerry McMaster, Xcite Linlithgow's Facility manager, said: "We are here to provide great facilities to the local community and are delighted to be able to provide training facilities for Linlithgow Kayak Racing.

"I'm sure that many of our regular customers don't realise that some of the country's most talented kayak stars are also using the facilities.

“It is very exciting to have these young people train in Linlithgow and we are just happy to play a small, but important part, in their success."
